Safety

At SABIC we take full responsibility for the safe operation of our business.  We pledge to promote the highest levels of safety and conform to internationally recognized standards and practices to achieve our goals.

A top priority

At SABIC, we strive to achieve excellence in safety for our employees and for our operations. From the outset, we installed and adhered to the most up-to-date technologies and standards at each SABIC site. The safety of our operations and our staff has always been given priority.

At SABIC we develop initiatives to support the safety of our staff and of the communities in which we operate. We have developed our own workplace standards of health and safety that match the best industry practice. This is reflected in our excellent safety performance, which is among the best in our industry.

Setting the standard

In 1992, we introduced our SABIC Process Safety Management Standards and SABIC Personnel Safety Standards. These guidelines help employees to identify, understand and control hazards that could cause accidents, without affecting efficiency or productivity. We developed our standards to reflect best practice within the industry. They are revised regularly to ensure that they comply with the latest international codes.

Protecting our people

The safety of our people is paramount, which is why every one of our staff plays a central role in implementing our safety systems. Each SABIC employee is charged with eliminating or controlling any risk associated with our affiliates’ operations. We actively address workplace safety issues by training staff, providing appropriate equipment and conducting regular investigations.

In addition to training, employees are equipped with protective clothing that meets the best industry standards. Guidelines on the availability and quality of the protective equipment for personnel are set out in SABIC’s Safety Standards. [Insert link] SABIC conducts routine reviews of hazards in the workplace. For example, we have a program called Process Hazards Analysis which is carried out for operations in all our plants. Another program, Job Safety Analysis, is carried out for all tasks – routine and otherwise – to identify potential hazards and to take action to reduce the risk to an acceptable level.

Encouraging safe practice

At SABIC, we believe in shared success, and we work in partnership with our affiliates and employees to make sure that we all meet the high standards we have developed. To encourage our affiliates to improve safety performance, SABIC has established an Annual Safety Award Program. The award’s criteria consider both the safety performance and the efforts made to improve it. SABIC affiliates are eligible to apply for the award if they do not record a major safety incident, such as a fatality, a large release of flammable or toxic material, or a fire or explosion resulting in a loss of over SR 10 million (US$2.6 million).

The regular audits carried out by SABIC’s Industrial Security and Environment division also encourage safe practices. Through a process of development, implementation and review, SABIC strives to encourage safe practice in all areas of its operations.
