Community and Society
Our social mission
SABIC is also active in promoting safety in the communities surrounding our facilities. We organize safety awareness events such as Safety Day, Traffic Safety and a Safe SABIC not only excels in the world of international business but also contributes significantly to society in many countries around the world. We are dedicated to building a supportive relationship with the wider community outside SABIC.
We do this by supporting social bodies, vocational institutions and charitable organizations through corporate donations and sponsorship. SABIC’s donation to charitable causes in 2005 totaled SR 21 million (US$5.6 million), in addition to SR 80 million (US$21.3 million) given to the Centennial Fund, which supports small and medium enterprises under a program that will create nearly 4,000 job opportunities for Saudi nationals in the next five years.
Recent examples
Some examples of other good causes we have recently supported include:
The Pakistan Earthquake Disaster Fund. We donated SR 8 million (US$2.1 million), as part of our ongoing effort to help victims of natural disasters the world over.
The Disabled Children Society. We gave reinforced steel worth SR 1 million (US$0.27 million) in support of its charitable endowment project in Riyadh.
The Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Social Care and Health Education Campaign. Our support included a donation of SR 100,000 (US$27,000) to the Prince Sultan Medical City.
The Charitable Society of the Saudi Ministry of Social Affairs.
The Qur’an Society.
Prince Salman Center for Disability Research.
The Asian Tsunami relief effort of 2004-5.
Our charitable role was recognized and rewarded when we won the Prince Mohammed Ibn Fahd bin Abdulaziz Award for Charity in 2005.
We have also funded chairs in the sciences at universities, as well as spending SR 6.6 million (US$1.8 million) in 2005 sponsoring seminars and conferences in line with our interests. We are also keen on funding scholarships for Saudi students; in keeping with our goal of encouraging excellence in academia, in 2005 we sponsored nearly 100 students to enable them to pursue their studies in the United States and Canada. In another academic program, SABIC also sponsored a visit to the North Pole by six Saudi students of the King Fahd Academy in London.
SABIC and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Our scholarship programs and our donation to the Centennial Fund are just two examples of our commitment to improving the future of the Saudi nation. These scholarship programs and donations are specifically intended to develop people for the good of the nation. We have a diverse and multinational workforce, which we value highly; at the same time, SABIC understands the importance of training and employing Saudi Arabian citizens to help the country develop and ensure it a prosperous future. For more about our workforce please see the People at SABIC section.
We are proud of our leading role in Saudi Arabia’s national and international commerce. We supply the national market with most of the petrochemicals, steel and fertilizers it requires, and our export activities (which exceeded SR 44.8 billion, or US$11.9 billion, in 2005) contribute significantly to the country’s balance of payments and earn valuable hard currency.
