Crude Industrial Ethanol (CIE) is a colorless liquid with an alcoholic odor. This crude alcohol is volatile, hygroscopic and miscible with water and organic solvents. It is flammable, harmful to health, and slightly reactive.

Ethyl alcohol (ethanol) is a highly flammable liquid, harmful if swallowed; in liquid and vapor forms, it is an irritant for the eyes and sensitive membranes. Small amounts will cause dizziness, mental confusion, intoxication, and affect the central nervous system. Large amounts can cause death. In case of fire, use dry chemicals, alcohol foam or carbon dioxide.

應用

CIE is most commonly used as feedstock in purification units to produce chemical grade ethanol, solvent grades, or sometimes fuel grades. Chemical grade ethanol can be oxidized to acetaldehyde and acetic acid. It is also used in the synthesis of many useful ethyl esters and various ethyl derivatives. The solvent grade is useful in the formulation of many perfumes, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, insecticides and organic solutions.

儲存與處理

The key points to be considered in the storage and handling of ethanol and light alcohols are severe fire hazards and irritation/toxic effects. Underground storage tanks in the open air are preferred in cold countries. Small amounts may be stored outdoors in ordinary steel containers. Store indoors in a cool and well-ventilated room at low liquid temperatures with vapor venting. Avoid ignition sources, static electricity and sparks. CIE should not be stored near peroxides, perchlorates or oxidizing acids.

Workers must use chemical goggles, rubber gloves, chemical cartridge respirators and rubber boots.

包裝

CIE is shipped in large chemical vessels (Type 3) with standard precautions. It may also be transported in tank trucks designed for highly flammable chemicals. Precautionary labelling: “Crude Industrial Ethanol, Highly Flammable Liquid, Harmful If Swallowed.” UN or ID No. 1170.
