Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) had a strong presence at the World Cup finals in its own way. Two of its star players – Lexan and Polyethylene – performed excellently, along with Xavi, Robben and Sneijder, key players of Spain and The Netherlands which played the finals in Johannesburg, South Africa, on July 11.
The goals of Lexan and Polyethylene did not count in the final tally, but nonetheless had a strong impact on the thousands of fans present at the stadium and on the millions who watched on television around the world. The Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, where the final took place, is covered by a 14,000 m2 roof made of SABIC Lexan PC sheet. This sheet delivers the clarity of glass without the drawbacks of weight and fragility, and provides a satisfying experience for soccer fans. The award-winning SABIC Lexan sheet is also carefully designed to resemble flowing water and protects up to 95,000 spectators from changing weather conditions. It also admits natural light, creating a pleasant ambiance.
Combining outstanding performance, environmental responsibility and aesthetics, SABIC’s Lexan PC sheet has also been used for the building joints of the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban as well as for roof glazing at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
