If it were up to us, not an ounce of value would be lost from hydrocarbon resources anywhere in the world. Because advances in technology can bring us closer to achieving this, research is vital to SABIC’s business.

SABIC’s Research and Technology (R&T) division works closely with our strategic business units to help us improve our manufacturing processes and develop new technologies. These innovations strengthen our technical know-how and give us a vital competitive edge, allowing our affiliates – and our customers – to improve the quality of their products.

As a measure of our success, in 2005 our research efforts led to 99 new patent applications, bringing our total number of proprietary patent applications to more than 695. Of these, 277 patents have already been granted. We currently license our process technologies to more than 19 chemical companies in eleven countries.

Our integrated, state-of-the-art Industrial Complex for Research and Technology opened in Riyadh in 1994. Today it employs over 500 scientists working on a full range of R&T activities. It also houses our environmental and industrial hygiene services. We have now established research and technology centers at four other SABIC sites across the globe: Al-Jubail in Saudi Arabia, Geleen in the Netherlands, Sugarland in Texas, USA, and Vadodara in India..

These satellite research centers are at the heart of our porgram of 'cross-national development', a term that describes our focus on developing technology in the location where it will be most useful. Our success in doing this has enabled our expansion across different markets and countries.

Our R&T activities in different countries have given us the technical expertise to provide outstanding customer service, which for us is a matter of pride. We foresee great opportunities for growth in our Research and Technology division.
