NORYL Resin

NORYL

SABIC’s NORYL™ resin family comprises traditional NORYL modified PPE resins, NORYL GTX™ resins which are blends of PPE and PA, NORYL PPX™ resins which are blends of PPE and PP, and FLEX NORYL resins which are formulated with PPE resin and thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs). These materials offer potential solutions to automotive challenges related to sustainability and occupant and pedestrian safety. For instance, as one of the lightest engineering thermoplastics, NORYL resin can help extend EV range and increase fuel economy.

Traditional NORYL resin grades, which are amorphous blends of PPE and PS resins, combine the best of both materials: high heat and chemical resistance, good electrical properties, excellent hydrolytic and dimensional stability, good processibility and low density. NORYL resins have a long history of proven performance in electrical applications such as connectors, ignition coils and junction boxes. Now, their potential use is expanding to other automotive areas, including EV battery packs, EVSE internal electrical components and ADAS sensors.

NORYL GTX resins have been used successfully for decades in painted exterior parts such as tank flaps, mirror shells, body panels and wheel covers. Its high temperature capability to withstand e-coating processes helps enable NORYL GTX resins to be used in body-in-white (BIW) structures and energy absorption applications. Low density combined with excellent impact resistance make these materials a good option for lightweighting through metal replacement.

The newest materials, FLEX NORYL resins, may be used in wire and cable insulation and jacketing. They offer a halogen-free flame-retardant alternative to PVC, while delivering equivalent flexibility and processing performance. Other key properties include very low water absorption and good abrasion resistance. FLEX NORYL resins with ultra-thin-wall extrusion capability can minimize wire bundles to conserve space and weight.
