Community and Society

Our social mission

SABIC not only excels in the world of international business but also contributes significantly to society in many countries around the world. We are dedicated to building a supportive relationship with the community outside our walls.

We do this by supporting social bodies, vocational institutions and charitable organizations through corporate donations and sponsorship.

Sponsorship and Donations:

We and our employees are also very much part of our wider communities. By our actions, we set an example. By our efforts, we can help improve things, on a local scale, all around the world. At least in part it’s about putting in a timely boost: very often, we can provide the help that a charitable or educational organization needs to get things off the ground.

SABIC supports charity and educational projects both within the Kingdom and elsewhere: cultural, training, and educational scientific programs; supports  universities and other educational institutions, and for the gifted and talented; supports disabled and special needs care societies, and for associations concerned with health care, and efforts and programs aimed for the protection of the environment. We also support the ‘Al-Ber’ fund which assists those in need, both inside and outside the company.
SABIC also sponsors many conferences, seminars and special events that raise awareness, disseminate ideas, and bring together the world’s best brains to consider issues of pressing concern to us all. Not just ‘green’ issues, but also cultural, social and intellectual. We want to be catalysts in our communities: supporting human endeavors for good and for self-improvement and for service to the community; getting behind those ideas and giving real, tangible support to the people nurturing them. We want our people, and their children, and the wider communities within which they live, to be not just healthy and safe, but happy, and creative, and living up to their full potential. Both drawing on and contributing to the interconnected ‘holistic’ well-being of their societies.

SABIC and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Our scholarship programs and donations are meant to  improve the future of the Saudi nation. These scholarship programs and donations are specifically intended to develop people for the good of the nation. We have a diverse and multinational workforce, which we value highly; at the same time, SABIC understands the importance of training and employing Saudi Arabian citizens to help the country develop and ensure it a prosperous future. For more about our workforce in the Middle East and Africa region please see the People at SABIC section.
SABIC supported a number of educational and cultural initiatives in 2009 including the Third Conference of Languages and Translation at Mohammad bin Saud Islamic University, and a symposium on attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in Riyadh. SABIC has also pledged SR 50 million to a national program to combat drugs – a five-year program initiated in 2009. SABIC held a diabetes awareness exhibition under the theme “Diabetes, Education and Prevention” in Jubail to mark World Diabetes Day. SABIC also participated in various other exhibitions in Saudi Arabia in 2009, including: Recycling & Waste Managemen; Saudi Agri-Food Industries; Safety, Health, and Environment; and the 28th International Agriculture, Water and Agri-Industry Show.

Global Contributions

In 2009, SABIC Innovative Plastics won the Dutch and European Responsible Care Award for our Valox and Xenoy iQ portfolio. SABIC volunteers led the BizWorld project in the Bergen op Zoom region, The Netherlands, teaching young people how to go about setting up a business. Others at the Lambertijnenhof, an institute for mentally and physically handicapped people, helped rejuvenate their farm.

At SABIC’s Teesside Petrochemicals plant, a wide range of community relations activities has been in place for many years in support of SABIC’s global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) effort. Over the course of 2009, around £25,000 was distributed to over 100 groups and individuals. We also continued to develop strong ties with local and regional educational groups through SABIC’s Teesside Education Liaison Steering Group.

SABIC in Germany has set its CSR objective as “to be a good neighbor,” focusing its activities primarily on local schools and kindergartens, where it can help young people from all
backgrounds, rich or poor, native or migrant.

In 2009 our materials were in the spotlight for reducing environmental impact across many industries in the United States. In building and construction, SABIC Innovative Plastics introduced highperformance Lexan* Thermoclear* nine-wall polycarbonate sheet to strengthen sustainable building design by increasing energy conservation, improving working and living environments, and promoting recycling.
