SABIC today outlined a range of innovative technologies and smarter practices that can assist farms of different sophistications to improve efficiencies, crop yields and profits.

The insights, shared at the AFA Annual Fertilizer Forum & Exhibition in Cairo, draw on pioneering research conducted at the firm’s sustainable agriculture center, Estidamah, and the experiences of an extensive caravan that engaged more than 7,000 farmers at over 120 locations in MEAF last year.

SABIC, a Platinum Sponsor of the three-day Forum, delivered two presentations including a technical lecture by Radi Abdullah Al Foraidi on “Estidamah Research on water use efficiency in modern greenhouses”. Established by SABIC in 2008, Estidamah is a Sustainable Agriculture Research and Development Center that focuses on increasing production to improve food security in Saudi Arabia.

Samir Al-Abdrabbuh, Executive Vice President, Agri-Nutrients, said: “for many years, SABIC has been working in close partnership with AFA, its members and individual farmers to address modern agricultural challenges and improve reliable food supply in the MENA region and globally. Our scientists continue to develop selective grades of agri-Nutrients and crop solutions, but our efforts extend far beyond the laboratory and we are committed to sharing our expertise.”

“A significant proportion of work is devoted to getting into the field, talking to people who work in the land and helping them to gain the skills to put SABIC’s solutions to the best possible use. We are proud of the engagements we made and will continue on this approach. For us, improving food supply and quality is a prime example of Chemistry that Matters™.”

At the Forum, SABIC shared research from its Estidamah Center which examined optimum conditions for crops within three greenhouse settings, simulating real-life conditions for farms that have access to basic, intermediate and high level technologies. The findings include recommendations across a range of variables related to irrigation, soilless planting, water recycling, natural lighting, temperature and humidity management.

In late 2018 the SABIC caravan, conducted in partnership with the AFA and local authorities, brought expertise and technical knowhow directly to farmers. At each stop, advanced soil testing was completed and practical workshops identified the optimum agri-nutrients for stronger crop yield. Advice was also provided on the prevention or treatment of plant illness.

Held in Cairo, Egypt, the AFA Annual Fertilizer Forum is regarded as the foremost fertilizer industry event in the MENA region. Now in its 25th year, the international Forum brings together more than 500 high level representatives from over 130 organizations based in more than 30 countries.
