Thousands benefit from SABIC’s community response to COVID-19 in Europe

As European countries and communities continue to contend with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, SABIC – a global leader in diversified chemicals – has helped support thousands of people through its combined community outreach efforts.

Across the continent, SABIC has been delivering a strategic CSR campaign that has helped support either healthcare workers on the frontlines, children in their education whilst schools are closed, elderly and vulnerable people in isolation or has prevented hunger through donations to foodbanks.

In total, SABIC has provided over €1m in funding and materials to support its efforts, and initiatives have been delivered across most of Europe, including Poland, the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and more.

SABIC solutions and materials are also making a meaningful difference in the fight against COVID-19 and SABIC has been leveraging its existing supply and value chains to get help where it is needed most. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) from Wilton in the UK was donated free-of-charge to a customer in Spain to help manufacture 210,000 sets of protective clothing to be used by medical staff in hospitals around Barcelona.

In Poland, SABIC also donated three pallets of LDPE to a leading manufacturer as part of a national Plastics4Life campaign. SABIC’s materials helped provide over 100,000 face masks for frontline workers.

All areas of SABIC’s European business have been involved in the response. T&I expertise has been provided to community groups in the UK to help develop a new protective face mask design. Following the review to determine which SABIC material would be best suited, the company donated 22 tonnes of material and more than 500,000 facemasks were able to be rapidly produced by injection moulding.

SABIC has also been collaborating with other industry partners. Polypropylene melt blown resins were donated to research institutes in Chemnitz, Germany and Tourcoing, France. The materials were used to produce nonwoven fabrics to then be manufactured into protective clothing items for use in Germany, the Netherlands and Spain.

SABIC’s material donations and use of its industry expertise have undoubtedly protected thousands from the effects of COVID-19. Across manufacturing sites and sales offices, local teams have been making their own impact in their communities.

Mark Williams, Vice president of SABIC for the region, said: “During this challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have collectively been successful in responsibly playing our role in maintaining continuity as an essential industry and we recognise the huge effort and resilience displayed by our employees. Our teams across the region have been working tirelessly to support their local communities and it has been inspiring to see. Whether through volunteering, providing funding or offering SABIC solutions which made a real difference – we felt it was our responsibility to do so during this time.”

To ensure the resilience and strength of the business during the COVID-19 crisis, SABIC established response teams to work with customers and stakeholders. Combined with extensive precautionary measures at SABIC sites across Europe to protect the health and safety of employees, SABIC ensured orders and supplies for urgently needed products to combat the virus were rapidly delivered.

Mr Williams continued: “We remain steadfast in our commitment to our communities, customers, employees and stakeholders during this crisis, for as long as it takes. We will continue to actively support the global, national and community response because collaboration is key to overcoming the virus.”
