Our donations in the Americas benefit more than 1 million people
When COVID-19 struck the Americas region, medical equipment and food were the greatest needs among those most impacted. To help support the vulnerable groups in our communities, we stepped up to make a difference and assist our neighbors in need.
In April, we announced US$ 1.5 million for monetary and in-kind donations in the region. A committee made up of employees from across Americas identified in-kind donation opportunities, as well as the allocation and distribution of the donations. We strategically focused on contributing toward food banks and social services organizations, like United Way, in order to have a far-reaching influence in the communities where we operate in North and South America.
Overall, the monetary donations to aid in the health and well-being of individuals reached more than 150,000 people across 87 communities in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and the United States. Donations to support food banks helped more than 850,000 while funding for social services organizations provided assistance for housing and utilities to more than 272,000.
“I wish to say again how much we appreciate SABIC's very generous donation to the Regional Food Bank," Mark Quandt of the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, said. “It will help us provide 200,000 meals for people impacted by COVID-19. The food we are providing for struggling families is really making a difference for them."
A major effort went toward producing more than 74,000 face shields for donation, made using LEXAN™ sheet. The face shields were delivered across the region in early June to first responders and medical personnel who are treating COVID-19 patients.
“Thank you so much for this wonderful and needed donation," said Nancy Stuart, Materials Management Director, CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital, Corpus Christi, Texas. “We are very appreciative."
From Canada to Brazil, our employees used their expertise and resources to collaborate with community members to produce much-needed products using our materials.
In Cobourg, Canada, Functional Forms donated 100 clear polycarbonate sheets to the Northumberland Hills Hospital who then collaborated with Venture13, a local non-profit that used a 3D printer to cut and assemble face shields for the hospital.
LEXAN™ 8 mm multi-wall sheets donated to the Cornwall Community Hospital in Canada allowed the hospital to increase its intensive care unit bed availability from 12 to 30.
A joint effort in Campinas, Brazil, saw us donate 30 sheets of Lexan ™ 9030G 0.75mm to go toward the making of 1,200 visors for face shields for area hospitals. The Campinas site also facilitated the production of much needed cases for High Efficiency Particle Air (HEPA) filters for use in mechanical ventilators by providing 100 kg of CYCOLAC™ ABS HMG47MD.
Employees across the Americas region also joined forces during the employee match campaign in which employees generously donated toward a charity of their choice. With our dollar-for-dollar match, the Americas campaign raised more than $222,000
