SABIC’s LEXAN™ portfolio is supporting global demand for protective products to combat COVID-19
As we turn the page on 2020, the COVID-19 outbreak continues to change our world in unprecedented ways. At SABIC, we believe that to overcome the challenges of COVID-19, we must continue to collaborate and pursue innovative solutions that can help our people, customers, and communities. The continuous innovation, resilience and strength of our global operations and supply chain has put us in a crucial position to address the challenges faced in 2020 and beyond.
Throughout the pandemic, we have supplied our customers with vital materials – including our LEXAN portfolio of polycarbonate sheet and film products – used in the urgent production of protective equipment, ventilator screens, barriers and face shields, to name just a few applications. In addition to healthcare settings and equipment, our customers are using these innovative material solutions for a wide variety of high-performance products that help contribute to improving sanitation control and preventing infections. Our LEXAN protective sheets and films are also being used across an extensive range of sectors that are facing particular hygiene and social distancing challenges during the pandemic, such as in medical and educational facilities, retail and hospitality outlets, alongside mass transportation.
Our global presence allows us to support the continuing demand for our products by harnessing our existing global resources, strategic network of manufacturing and distribution facilities, and country teams and partners. For example, in May, we prioritised working closely with our customers in Vietnam to deliver LEXAN resin with high clarity and scratch resistance to support the production of 360,000 protective goggles. This effort led to the safeguarding of front line medical workers in Vietnam, Japan and Germany.
In the United States, our employees contributed to a major effort to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to healthcare facilities. In early June, we used our LEXAN sheet to produce more than 74,000 face shields for donation. The face shields were delivered across the region to first responders and medical personnel who were treating COVID-19 patients and thousands of face shields were donated across multiple states and hospitals in Texas.
In addition to this, we donated our LEXAN multi-wall sheet to the Cornwall Community Hospital in Canada, which enabled the hospital to increase its intensive care unit bed availability from 12 to 30. Elsewhere in the Americas, we participated in a joint effort in Campinas, Brazil, donating 30 LEXAN 9030G sheets to contribute to the making of 1,200 visors for face shields for area hospitals.
The increased production of our LEXAN sheets, which provided much-needed PPE, protective screens and barriers, and medical equipment, would not have been possible without our production facilities across Europe, Asia and North and South America. Our global reach has enabled us to produce, manufacture and distribute our LEXAN sheet across every region around the world, and contribute to the ongoing battle against COVID-19.
A testament to our global reach, our innovative polycarbonate sheet and film solutions are helping to minimise the risk associated with the pandemic, and are providing increased employee and personnel safety protection against COVID-19. For example, in Germany, our polycarbonate sheet products are being used by Brillant Bus Glas GmbH, the automotive glass manufacturer, who are customizing and supplying these partition panels to public bus brands in Germany.
Furthermore, in India, our product is being used by Image Labels to deliver face shields to government bodies, police departments, hospital groups and leading original equipment manufacturers such as Schneider. LEXAN sheet is also used there in partitions for taxis and other modes of transportation. The rigidity, outstanding strength, and the double-sided abrasion-resistant coating, coupled with the long-term transparency of the material, make it an ideal solution for permanent professional driver protection, while also complying with current local anti-pandemic contact restrictions.
These are just some of the ways we are using our global reach, innovative products and solutions to overcome some of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. There is an urgent and ongoing need around the world for protective equipment, not only to fight against this current pandemic but also to improve safety and hygiene standards in the future. As a company that excels in developing ground-breaking materials, we are furthering our ambition to innovate and provide the newest technology to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and help mitigate further infections.
