Crash & Safety

Crash & Safety

Evolving crash regulations, larger and higher trucks and SUVs, and greater consumer focus on driving safety, as seen in the proliferation of ADAS sensors, are prompting automotive OEMs to look for solutions that absorb impact energy with maximum efficiency and minimal demands on space. Key areas of focus are applications for passive pedestrian safety, low- and high-speed crash mitigation, and occupant protection including front-end modules, energy absorber beams and undertrays, and crash cones.

Thermoplastic materials such as SABIC’s long glass fiber-reinforced STAMAX™ resins are highly effective in absorbing energy efficiently under a wide range of in-use temperatures. SABIC XENOY™ and XENOY HTX resins deliver excellent modulus, strength and elongation to failure, resulting in improved energy absorption.

Thermoplastics also enable part consolidation and offer a high strength-to-weight ratio that can help conserve space. Thanks to an exceptionally wide portfolio, SABIC can offer both high-temperature coating-capable materials for the body-in-white (BIW) and materials for offline-assembled modules.

Pedestrian Safety

The design trend of larger trucks and SUVs with higher front ends poses an increased risk to pedestrian safety. Thermoplastics can be used in these new designs to enable softer front ends that help improve pedestrian impact performance.

Featured Product Grades

Body in White Solutions

Balancing weight reduction for greater fuel or EV battery efficiency with effective crash protection can be challenging for OEMs. Using local thermoplastic reinforcements for rails, rocker panels, crossbars and hybrid pillars in the BIW can enhance stiffness and crash protection while enabling weight-out.

XENOY™ HTX950

Polyester-based alloy; unfilled; enhanced flow; high heat resistance; low-temperature ductility; modified for energy absorption and deformation resistance.

XENOY™ HTX975

Polyester-based alloy; 35% glass fiber reinforcement; enhanced flow; high heat resistance; low-temperature ductility and elongation; e-coating capability.

XENOY™ HTX575

Polyester-based alloy; 30% glass fiber reinforcement; enhanced flow; high heat resistance; low-temperature ductility and elongation; e-coating capability.

EV Battery Protection

To protect lithium-ion EV batteries from fire and thermal runaway in the event of a crash, the battery pack must withstand side pole impacts without deforming. Energy absorption solutions made with SABIC thermoplastics, such as honeycomb rocker reinforcements and side beams, can offer effective protection while minimizing additional weight.
