SABIC Wins 2021 Responsible Care® Chairman’s Award As Recognition Of Its Excellent Practice Of Sustainable Development

SABIC, a world leading diversified chemicals company, has been recognized by AICM on its Responsible Care® Award for the third consecutive time during an award ceremony held in Nanjing yesterday. The award recognized SABIC’s excellent achievements over the past two years in actively fulfilling its corporate social responsibilities, thoroughly implementing the Responsible Care® initiative and driving sustainable development in China.

Li Lei, Vice President and Regional Head, North Asia, SABIC, attended the award ceremony on behalf of SABIC. “We are very honored to have won five awards since the Responsible Care Award® was first launched in 2013,” He said, “Today, all sectors of society are actively driving sustainable development and empowering circular economy. Taking this year’s awards as a new starting point, we also look forward to further responding to the calls of Responsible Care®, continuously strengthening the industry’s sustainable development and bringing positive impact to the communities we operate.”

Responsible Care® is a global initiative within the chemical industry, that aims to improve the health and environmental performance of the industry, enhancing safety in operations and products, and strengthening communication among stakeholders. For SABIC, Responsible Care® also mandates our code of conduct for sustainable development, enabling continued improvement in environmental sustainability, health and safety & security (EHSS). SABIC received the Responsible Care® Merit Award in 2013 and 2015 and was further awarded the Responsible Care® Chairman’s Award in 2017 and 2019.

As a member of the AICM Responsible Care® Program, SABIC has continuously improved its EHSS over the past two years thanks to the synergies in the company’s sustainability strategy and Responsible Care®. With the deepening of sustainability trends such as low carbon emissions and environmental protection in China, SABIC also expects to meet the new requirements for high-quality development put forward by the “14th Five-Year Plan” by continuously advocating the principle of Responsible Care® in operations.

SABIC actively supports the development of relevant national food safety standards, maintains close communication with government authorities, industry associations and key laboratories, and strives to extend cooperation throughout the whole value chain; Focusing on road transportation safety for chemicals, SABIC is deeply participating in the establishment of the Road Safety Quality Assessment System (RSQAS) and applies it to its own operations. To Strengthen process safety management, SABIC is also actively taking part in the study and discussion of the Guidelines for the Identification and Control of Potential Safety Risks in Hazardous Chemical Enterprises. In focusing on circular economy, SABIC has extensively explored the recycling of plastics waste with industry partners, and its TRUCIRCLE™ solutions and other related achievements have also been included in the AICM’s Sustainability Report.

Moreover, with the introduction of a series of corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, SABIC has effectively enhanced the awareness of Responsible Care® among the next generation. In 2020, SABIC’s global CSR project “Back to School” achieved a new milestone by going online, which not only provided career counselling for university students interested in the chemical industry, but also donated a batch of hand-painted canvas shoes to primary school students in Guangxi as New Year gifts. The company also showcased its SABIC Technology Center via virtual visits.
