Future Proofing Success Through Collaborative Innovation

Corporate Technology and Innovation (T&I) team work collaboratively to meet the needs of our customers and the value chain of today and tomorrow. This team comprises over 1,600 employees, who work on a variety of projects across 20 centres around the world.

With over 10,000 patents in its portfolio, T&I delivers pioneering and sustainable product, process, and application solutions. This is all work that is crucial to ensuring we deliver Chemistry That Matters™ and is achieved in two key ways:

DELIVERING SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION

A central focus at SABIC is to ensure our solutions help future proof the global populations socially, economically, and environmentally. To this end, we have strategically aligned our business with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), embedding sustainability at the heart of our innovation.

Our T&I team play a key role in making this sustainable innovation possible. For example, their work is central to our contribution toward achieving a global Circular Carbon Economy (CCE) and they have been active in promoting and demonstrating the potential for SABIC solutions to be deployed internationally

“We are focused on growing and nurturing future leaders who will help solve tomorrow’s challenges. Through initiatives such as the TED program, and indeed through our collaborations with more than 40 global universities, we are committed to driving research and developing the next generation of researchers and scientists.”

- Dr Al-Jodai, Leader of the Technology Early-career Development (TED) Program, SABIC.

In September 2020, SABIC supported the world’s first blue ammonia shipment in partnership with Saudi Aramco and Institute of Energy Economics Japan (IEEJ). The project involved moving 40 tons of high-grade blue ammonia for use in zero-carbon power generation and stemmed from an original proposal for improving supply chain efficiency from Dr Abdulaziz Al-Jodai, Research Fellow in our T&I team. The implementation has been acknowledged by IEEJ, one of the world’s leading energy think tanks, as an important step forward toward realizing the circular carbon economy.

The Government of the United Kingdom has also recognized the significance of SABIC’s carbon-demonstration projects. Fruitful dialogues and presentations on SABIC’s carbon capture plant in Jubail – led by Dr Al-Jodai – helped position SABIC’s plant as an intrinsic part of the UK’s 2050 decarbonization plan. Further to implementing key sustainability projects, our T&I team are an important advocate for our sustainability ambitions. Among numerous event participations, the team have contributed to initiatives including the G20 workshop on Circular Carbon Economy and the 9th European Energy Day. Most recently, Dr Al-Jodai represented a SABIC delegation which was invited to present to the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland.

These multi-regional involvements are testament to the collaborative nature of the T&I team and the global value they contribute toward SABICs broader commitment to sustainable innovation.

EMPOWERING SUCCESS TODAY AND TOMORROW

The current and future challenges that we face require the right talent to develop solutions. With over 31,000 global employees, our focus is on investing in today and tomorrow’s talent to help solve society’s challenges and drive sustainable and inclusive development.

Our T&I team are key contributors to the investments we make in our teams and partnerships and initiatives with universities. All of which position us as a top employer in our key markets, enabling us to attract and retain the best talent to maintain our competitive advantage for years to come.

A key example of how the T&I team support us in empowering success is through our Technology Early-career Development (TED) program. The aim of the program is to accelerate talent development for early-career scientists and engineers, preparing them for success working at SABIC. The T&I team work closely with SABIC’s Human Resources (HR) team to continuously tailor and improve the program experience for students, ensuring SABIC’s early-career professionals around the world can benefit from it.
